The HYPE Athletics Recreation Center is a fantastic place to teach children about themselves. HYPE Athletics Recreation Center has a unbelievable amount of space for many community members and their families to occupy. From health and fitness to tutoring and reading programs, there are many different levels to helping the community. This is a place where I feel comfortable teaching and mentoring these students. Being able to participate in this Service Learning environment will allow me to be able to see things in a diverse way. Culture is a huge part of a child's life. We need to be equipped as educators to help bring some of these cultures into our classroom environments.
Service Learning Reflection Part 1
Melissa Calderon
I do my service learning at HYPE Athletics Recreation Center in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. I do volunteer here along with a few other classmates. This makes me feel super comfortable. I met with the Director Chris Pappas. He was very easygoing and knowledgeable about the site and the program requirements. He gave me a tour of the facility and was easy to contact. He also gave me details about the tutoring and reading programs, what they consist of and how they work. HYPE is a community based facility that works with the community to prosper.
I partook in the tutoring classroom and the library reading program. During my tutoring session, I met a few students there. I worked on math concepts with a female student at a 1st grade level. I also worked on math concepts with a male student who was at a 4th grade level. I also worked with another male student who was at a 6th grade level but had to pass him off to Mr. Bill (another tutor). These students seemed to be interested in learning the concepts and how to reach the solution. I tutored a 1st grade female student in the library reading program with reading and writing a short story. HYPE has a great tutoring and reading program available for students from Kindergarten on up. They have the essential skills and an organized facility in order to best meet the student’s needs for learning and growth.
I will be working with students tutoring them for math, reading, and any other homework assistance they may need. I will be helping these students to understand the concept and the solution to the problem. I will be helping these students to become successful young learners ready to enhance their minds further. I will be helping children to read and write. I will be able to help them to understand how to read and sound out the words they do not know. I will be helping them to write better and at their grade level or beyond. This will help these students to better identify with reading and writing in their way of learning.
My initial observations about HYPE Athletics Recreation Center were that of organization, leadership, community based, target objectives, and cleanliness. The tutoring programs run from certain times and days with leaders there to assist you. This is a fantastic place for the community to be involved with and support. The community is just as beautiful. Parents are in need of these types of programs for their children to prosper. Having these types of resources is amazing to help the community to grow and become a better society.
I expect to learn about diverse cultures, how to interact with students at their level of understanding, how to interact with parents and their understanding of the subject, how to devote my time to certain areas that have a harder concept and make it easier for students to understand, and how to become a better educator through this process. This is my career goal and I enjoy working with children. I want to be able to open their minds to new horizons in life.
Service Learning Reflection Part 2

I have had so many interesting experiences at HYPE Athletics Recreation Center. Every time I go to HYPE, I have to check in and sign in at the front desk. I proceed to my tutoring classrooms that are located on the second floor. I sit down at a desk with my materials (paper, pencil, eraser, calculator, etc…) and I display my name tag. I work with so many different children each time and it is very, very valuable. When my student comes in I ask them what homework they have or what they need help with. I tell them to sit next to me and I help them with their work. I do not do any of their work for them; I help them to find the solution to their problems in a different way for them to come up with the solution on their own. As the student is doing their work, I check to see if they are doing it correctly. If they are having trouble, I help them to figure out the problem in an easy way for them to understand. Maybe the student needs to learn a different way than the method they were taught that day. I am there to help the student understand the material in a simpler way than what they think. Being able to solve a problem a few different ways is easier than just trying the same method over and over again, getting the student frustrated. I think that students learn at their own pace and level. Not each student learns the same as the other. I not only work the tutoring program, I work with the reading program as well. I work with first and second graders to help them read better. I help them follow the words with their fingers, as well as, sounding out the words. They read books at their appropriate reading levels. I think that working with these tutoring programs are exactly what I expected them to be! These programs not only benefit the student, but the tutor as well.
.
My work has not really changed since the beginning of the semester. I am still working with the tutoring and reading programs through HYPE. I work with the same classmates who do their service learning at HYPE also (see Michelle Kiss pictured above). I work with the same children each time. I work on different subjects with them, which is different. I also have built some special bonds with some of these students. My relationships have definitely changed with the students, the parents, the community, and the employees. I feel like I am part of a family here. I have gained a little bit more responsibility and knowledge working with some of the disabled children that attend their daily school programs at HYPE. This is something I am so passionate about, working with children of all capacities and diversities. I think this kind of work has helped me to see that teaching is truly my passion and that I intend on committing myself to completing my degree!
My work benefits the community in many ways. There is such a bond between the student and the tutor that this helps to build a healthy relationship. This is a very close community. I have always felt welcomed and like family at HYPE. This is a place where I can not only build relationships with the student, but their parents and the community who attends HYPE. I help impact their children's learning style. I help impact the community by the positive and healthy relationships I share with the employees, the students, and the community. Everyone acts as a community and lends a helping hand when needed, is always courteous, and wants you to grow with their community.
Diversity seems to be a huge topic in today's society. I have learned so many new things about different cultures, how to greet them properly, and how to interact with students who use English as a Second Language (ESL). I have learned how diversity plays a major role in your classroom environment. Being able to identify with students of all diversities will help me to impact their learning abilities in a meaningful way. We need to value the difference in people. Diversity is looked at by race or religion or nationality statuses. I see diversity as experiencing different things than I am normally used to in my life. Being able to listen to new ideas and perceptions from a diverse group is very significant. This leads to thinking outside the box, incorporating new ideas into your classroom, incorporating new strategies in your teaching style. Diversity is beneficial to society. It will help us come together as one, a better society.
My service learning affects my life in many great ways. I have learned how to incorporate my volunteer hours into my daily schedule. I have learned about different cultures and backgrounds. This will help me to incorporate great ideas in my classroom teaching environment in useful ways. My service learning has impacted my life in a very beneficial way - by letting me know that this is what I strive to be in life, a teacher. This is one of my greatest accomplishments. I am so proud to stand by my dreams and fulfill my educational goals. I am thankful for my time at HYPE! It has benefited my life in many ways. I have learned so much in such a short time. This experience will be with me forever. I plan on making my volunteer time a more permanent thing as well. I think helping children is what I was put on this earth to do. I plan on committing to my goals and becoming a unique and loved educator that has helped children to become successful!
Service Learning Reflection Part 3
Melissa Calderon
In this semester there are many ways that my community service work relates to my coursework. During my service learning at HYPE Athletics Recreational Center I have seen that the books relate to my coursework in instances such as diversity, multicultural education, and the Watson Reflection. Diversity seems to be one of those things that we cannot ignore, this is staring at us right in the face daily. There is no way that we can revolve our classrooms around one culture, one language, or one specific group. We as teachers must be able to open up our classrooms to diversity and multiculturalism. Every person in this world is unique and our classrooms need to be a reflection of the diversity in this world. We are there to open up these students minds and help them to explore the opportunities that exist in this world. Diversity is a huge topic within the school systems. At HYPE, there is a diverse number of students and members. There are many different type of people that attend the center and the after school programs. I have tutored student of many different races, ages, and genders. HYPE collaborates with the diverse community to bring them together as one. HYPE is a judgment free zone and anyone can be a member here. Multiculturalism is another way that the book relates to my coursework. Being able to identify with many different cultures is important to learn about different aspects of the world, someone else, and the way their culture shapes their life. HYPE Athletics Recreational Center is a place where multiculturalism exists. I have seen the impact that HYPE has on their community and it has done a great job of building a community that works together.
I have learned many things about the students, the center, and the community from HYPE. The students are in some way related to one another. There are many great students at HYPE. They are always asking for help if they need it, what to do next, helping each other out, and always laughing. It seems that they all work together as a group and not individually. They all know one another by name even if there is no relation. The tutors work together with one another as well. If one tutor does not know the answer to something they are not afraid to ask another tutor to help in the solution. The community works together as well. They all know one another, always speak to another, carpool together, and always there to help each other out. Everyone at HYPE is easy-going, there to help assist you with anything, courteous, family-oriented, works together, and is revolved around diversity.
I can say for sure that HYPE has changed some of my views in the classroom. The experiences I have had at this service learning site has been very valuable. There are many things that I would incorporate in my classroom that would be centered around diversity and multiculturalism. I have learned that these students have impacted my views on teaching. I have learned how to interact with students on different levels and of different cultures. Being able to identify with a diverse group of students will help me to build my classroom around the needs of my students. I want to be a teacher now more than ever before because of HYPE. HYPE has been a very valuable experience that will help me to be a better teacher. I am more aware of what my students will need to learn in a comfortable atmosphere. If my classroom feels like home, these students will want to come in eager to learn every single day. I have learned how to deal with a problem student as well. It seems that I come off as the “super cool” teacher, but I do not want these students to mistake my kindness for a weakness. I may be really nice, but I am also very stern when I need to be. Being able to interact with a problem student has taught me that it is acceptable to be nice, but not to be taken advantage of. The world has changed drastically over time. These students are teaching me as I teach them. It seems as though the world is changing, but so are the techniques these students are taught in the classroom. I am able to understand what these students are learning and how they learn on an individual basis. As a teacher, I will make sure that the parents are involved with their student’s education and the progress they are making throughout the school year.
The community is very involved with HYPE. HYPE offers not only health and fitness programs, but education programs for the children of the community. Place Based Community Education plays a role in this community by their actions. This community is very involved with HYPE and the events HYPE holds. HYPE has done many things for the community like food drives, toy drives, Camp HYPE, a Turkey giveaway, computer training, learning a language, and annual dinners. HYPE is a Place Based Community Education center that in extremely involved in the community. See this video for the Turkey giveaway and the involvement of the community https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=15&v=5HhjhATydXg. HYPE is a place where the community is involved and the students see the interaction of the community involvement.
Service Learning Reflection
Melissa Calderon
My service learning experience impacted my views of becoming an educator and many positive ways. I cannot truly define what an educator really is because an educator has many endless possibilities. I think that being an educator is important because we can teach someone the knowledge they don't have in order to survive in society in a positive way. My service learning experience was very unique and informative. I was able to learn many things about students, other educators, and the way the classroom is built around the needs of the students. I believe this has impacted my life in a positive way to show me the difference in culture, diversity, and how to teach students at their level. I am definitely thankful for the service learning experience because I know it made me a better person. It made me more aware of what I can do as an educator to provide my students with a positive, educational, and safe environment to learn. Being able to help students as one of my goals in life. I think the service learning experience was very beneficial and helps me to understand that my classroom needs to be built around the student's educational needs.
The most rewarding experience for my service learning site was being able to learn about the diverse needs of students in different areas. Diversity happens all around us and we need to be more aware of what our classrooms offer students and how to teach them in a way they can learn easily. this experience has helped me to understand the needs of my students, the involvement of the parents, the school systems, and how to involve the community. I believe that students need to open their minds and be able to reflect back on what they learn through their experiences and use them in a positive way to further themselves in life.
I did not really in counter any problems or get frustrated during my service learning experience. I did encounter a student who did not listen, would not follow directions, and was very rude at all times. The parents did not seem to care at all and just let the student do whatever she pleased. I believe that the students attitudes are a reflection of their home life. I believe that with parents involvement there can be a way to encourage the student in a positive manner at all times for the student to stay positive. Being able to work with the families and the student will help to benefit the student later on in life. I think it is very important that students and parents stay involved with the school in order for the student to have a beneficial life. The main goal with this problem is to be able to encourage the student to be more productive in a positive manner, engage with other students in a positive manner, and to help the student understand that manors is very important. I believe that with the teacher, student, and the parents involvement the student will be able to function properly and society.
Kids are going to be kids, this does not matter where they come from, they are still kids. Education is a powerful and useful tool to help the students become someone influential in their lives. I am committed to empower these children through their education. Teachers need to learn how to deal with different perspectives, so they can visualize the perspectives of different cultures, values, and ways of living. It will be my responsibility to make a difference, to meet the needs of the students in an urban setting, and to find a way to reach the students minds and a positive learning environment. I believe that it is important to raise these children with a greater awareness of others around them, especially those who are different from them. Being able to promote diverse city in the classroom is very significant to give these children the knowledge they need in order to survive and a productive society. It is very important to embrace and value diverse city in the classroom.
In conclusion, I would love to say that this was a fantastic learning experience. Again, there is no way we can resolve our classrooms round one culture, language, or specific group. As educators, we must be able to open up our classrooms to diversity and multiculturalism. We must be aware of how to teach these students in a productive and positive manner that they can learn in. Our goal is to be able to identify with these students, teach them at their level, be understanding and open, let these students express their ideas and be able to use their voices, identify with other cultures, get involved with the community, and help to build a better society.
Description
The teacher does use understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet higher standards through the service learning documents provided above. The documents provided establish the criteria met for being committed to diversity.
Reflection
Each child is a unique person who needs a safe, compassionate, and energizing environment in which to develop and become fully grown physically, emotionally, intellectually, and socially. It is my aspiration as a teacher to help students encounter their complete abilities and potential in all of these core sections by providing an environment that is secure, encourages curiosity, and invites an openness of ideas that are shared.
